Richard Christian Nelson Expressive Portraits
Expressive Portraits: Capturing the Essence
When: October 24,25,26 Friday thru Sunday
Time: 9:30 to 4:30 with lunch break
Where Meyer Vogl Gallery/Studio Daniel Island, 250 River Landing Drive, Daniel Island SC
$745 A live model will be provided each day. Tips for the model are encouraged
In over 25 years as a professional artist, Richard has completed over 500 oil portraits, 1000 charcoal portraits, sold many gallery paintings, been part of a number of shows, and won a number of awards, mostly from the Portrait Society of America and the Oil Painters of America, both of which organizations he is a signature member.
In this workshop Rich will be focusing on painting the head with good drawing and strong natural color. The workshop is open to all ages and skill level, and all media. Rich will be using oils.
Rich breaks painting down into seven steps: inspiration, composition, drawing, value, color, paint application and edges, and calling it done.
Day 1: Starting with introductions, a lecture on his materials and approach, light and shadow, and on color. He will do a demo and then the class will set up and begin painting.
Days 2 and 3 will also start with a demo and then artists will paint afterwards.
Throughout the time that artists are working on their own pieces there will be number of class reviews along the way; mostly just putting the work up and having each artist say 'how it's going’.
Rich often keeps painting if the class would like, as he is interested in demonstrating and participating in the "process" of painting
